What will we learn?
This year in Science we will explore a variety of topics. We begin our year by studying the Scientific Method. During this mini unit, the students learn the difference between variables and controls while learning the proper steps (POHECA) to conduct a fair experiment. Immediately following this mini unit, we begin our first science kit called Motion and Design. In this unit, the students will use K-nex pieces to build vehicles to meet certain requirements. The students will explore Newton's Laws of Motion to see how they affect the way a vehicle travels. We will discuss and experiment with things such as force, motion, acceleration, and gravity. Before beginning our second kit on Plant Growth and Development, we will explore two mini units on Light and Sound. In the Light unit, we will discuss the various parts of the eye to learn "how we see" as well as conduct lab experiments on color. The sound unit begins by having the students learn how sound travels from an object to your ear and then how our brain interprets sound. We will study the parts of the ear and conduct lab experiments on how sound travels. The Plant Growth and Development unit is our final unit of the year and is always a favorite for the students. During this unit, the students will be working with Wisconsin Fast Plants, which go from seed to seed in about six weeks. The students will plant seeds within the first week of the unit and observe them to see how a specific variable affects their plant growth. at the end of this unit, the students will harvest the seeds that developed in the plants.
